Becoming "The Doctor"

The cast of Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody (l. to r.) Erica Gooch, Alli Soowal, Kelly Jennings. Adam Cooper, Tom McManus

The only constant amongst the many regenerations of the Doctor is that they are all different.

Except for the two hearts.

Well, and they are curious and like to travel.

Oh, and they prefer a little company.

So maybe not all that different, really.

Just as all Time Lords must eventually regenerate, so will the cast of Timeprov regenerate, with a new Doctor each and every week.

For the past three months, the Timeprov cast members have been rehearsing and improvising adventures while perfecting their OWN versions of The Doctor.

On a break, we asked director Michael Jeffery Cohen to describe each cast member’s version:

Kelly Jennings

Kelly Jennings in Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody

Kelly’s Doctor is a little Jodie Whittaker, a bit of Capaldi, and a slice of Jon Pertwee.

Jon Pertwee, in Kelly’s opinion, is the most sophisticated of the Doctors...maybe until Peter Capaldi. Three was more sympathetic to the characters around him than 12 was, but both have a flamboyance and a high-status aspect that is delightful. Jodie Whittaker plays the Doctor with a lot more playful sense of adventure than maybe anyone since Tom Baker. And that mix of impish “try anything” and a sense of “I’ve got this!”--even when it’s clear the Doctor decidedly does NOT have it--embodies the way Kelly has played the Doctor.

Kelsey Hébert

Kelsey Hébert in Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody

Kelsey's Doctor takes some Matt Smith, a bit of Tonks. and a spoonful of Mary Poppins. There may or may not be singing.

We were talking and we mostly agreed that if Mary Poppins and Matt Smith’s Doctor had a Time Baby...it would be Kelsey. She’s sophisticated, no-nonsense, and kind, while also entirely unpredictable. You don't want to mess with Kelsey’s Doctor. You’ll think you have defeated her, but suddenly she has all the solutions, spit-spot and plenty of time for tea!

Tom McManus

Tom McManus in Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody

Tom McManus's Doctor is a pinch of Captain Jack, a dash of Rory, and a slathering of 10!

There is a reason David Tennant is many people’s favorite new-series Doctor. He’s charming and full of adventure. And then there is Captain Jack--a hero from another age, ready to take on anyone or anything. And Rory, the Last Centurion who waited 2,000 years for the love of his life. We can’t think of anyone in real life who embodies the mix of heroism, fun, and loyalty that Tom shows us when he plays his Doctor.

Alli Soowal

Alli Soowal in Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody

Alli Soowal's Doctor is part Nathan Fillion, part David Tennant, and a topping of Silken Windhound.

That “I’m just here for the adventure and cash, flash a charming smile, tell a story, then RUN! RUN LIKE THE WIND” persona. It’s always a workout when Alli plays the Doctor. We wouldn’t have it any other way, and when you see Alli’s Doctor, you’ll find you wouldn’t, either.

Erica Gooch

Erica Gooch in Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody

Erica Gooch's Doctor is a perfect mix of Paul McGann, River Song, and Wanda Sykes! Smart, funny, beautiful, and deadly.

Erica knew nothing about Doctor Who when she joined our cast. It has been so much fun watching her reactions as she learns about the show. Erica plays the Doctor with that cool and direct confidence Paul McGann brought to the role, just a hint of superiority mixed with a lot of love and concern. Then, there is the bold and sassy side that reminds us of River Song. And Erica is a brilliant comedian and super-talented improviser--and any person with all these qualities who isn't a Time Lord must be Wanda Sykes.

Adam Cooper

Adam Cooper's Doctor is a dash of Wash, a pinch of Sherlock, and a spoonful of 12. Fantastic!

Now, we were all a bit surprised by Adam’s suggestion of Wash from Firefly, as we were thinking Rory. But the way Adam solves problems and discovers a villain's weak spots, we had to admit that the low-key genius of Wash is part of this Doctor’s DNA. Add some of Sherlock’s and Peter Capaldi’s self-assuredness, and you get Adam’s Doctor.

David Dritsas

David Dritsas in Timeprov: The Improvised Doctor Who Parody

David Dritsas's Doctor is a mix of the Peters: Davison and Capaldi.

Have you seen Peter Davison? He looks just LIKE David Dritsas! Well, OK, Davison’s a bit taller, but still, the resemblance is striking. Throw in some of Capaldi’s comedic brilliance and 12’s ability to put seemingly unrelated clues together, and your Doctor is David Dritsas.

Which one will save the universe? Only way to find out is to come and see
