aPOCalypse Weekend 2018

CSz Philadelphia, Home of ComedySportz, presents aPOCalypse Weekend 2018 spotlighting improvised comedy by people of color

For Immediate Release, United States (September 18, 2018) – This October, CSz Worldwide’s second annual aPOCalypse Weekend comes to Philadelphia.

On Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13, performers of color from around the United States will converge on the CSz Philadelphia theater, 2030 Sansom Street, for hilarious ComedySportz matches, as well as freewheeling improv jams, developmental workshops, and discussions of diversity and inclusion in the comedic arts.

Friday’s programming features the aPOCalypse Jam (10 pm) featuring local improv ensembles Supreme Court Justice and American Express. Admission to the jam is free (donations to our diversity scholarship program will be accepted) and attendees will have opportunities to participate on stage. Saturday at 7:30 and 10 pm, teams of POC players will go head to head in two ComedySportz improv matches.

The goals of the weekend are to increase the connectedness of players of color in CSz Worldwide, and in the wider improv community; to address challenges unique to players of color through workshops; and to entertain audiences while celebrating underrepresented PoC talent on the CSz Philadelphia stage.

Last year’s inaugural aPOCalypse Weekend drew nine improvisers of color to Chicago for two highly successful ComedySportz matches. This year’s event will feature performers from Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; Portland, OR; Richmond, VA; and other cities, as well as local Philadelphia improvisers of color.

Why aPOCalypse Weekend? “Even in the most ideal circumstances, being a person of color in predominantly white spaces has its own unique set of challenges,” reflects co-chairperson Erica Gooch, a member of the ComedySportz Philadelphia ensemble. “Being able to connect with other players and celebrate our differences is incredibly fun and impactful. Last year, the positive energy of the weekend stuck with me for a long time, and I’m so excited to bring this event to our home turf.”

Co-chair Luis Cortes, a ComedySportz Chicago ensemble member, further summarizes the impact of the weekend: “We've seen a tremendous boost in interest. Word of mouth brought in several outstanding performers and students who'd never set foot in our space before…. We've also seen a higher percentage of women and LGBT performers coming to auditions.”

On bringing this year’s event to CSz Philadelphia, Cortes adds, “It’s a challenge to see how we can keep up continual engagement through performances and education. How can we continue to bring in underrepresented performers and students? How do we get to a point where a POC/CSz event is something we do just as a celebration instead of the centerpiece of our engagement and outreach?”

CSz Philadelphia’s 2018 aPOCalypse Weekend offers audience members and performers alike a unique opportunity to witness, and to present, too-often-overlooked talent in improvised comedy.

ABOUT JAMIE

Jamie Campbell is a nationally touring stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. His debut stand-up album, Tell Me You’re Proud of Me, debuted at #1 on Amazon’s comedy charts.   In Chicago, where he began his career, he was named the city’s “Best Stand-Up Comedian” by The Chicago Reader. His film and television work includes appearances on NBC's Chicago Fire and Pop TV's Hollywood Darlings,  as well as a stand-out performance in the indie feature Sex Ain't Love. ABOUT THE SHOW

Jamie Campbell re-lives the time he was kidnapped as a child in this solo performance that is part comedy, part storytelling, and 100% true. Travel back to 1991 as Jamie returns to what he calls the “greatest adventure of my life.”  Harrowing at points, and astounding in others, the veteran comedian deftly walks the line between comedy and tragedy, exposing his own faults, and refusing to play the victim card. The production was the surprise hit of the KC Fringe Festival where it was the only solo show named “Best of Fest.”  Out of the 92 participating productions, none received better reviews.

  • "Best of Fringe" - 2017 KC Fringe Festival

  • "5 Stars!" - Bob Evans, KC Applauds

  • “... the absolute BEST performance I’ve seen at the Fringe...so good, I’m seeing it twice.” - Tracy Thomas

  • “... a wizard at mining gold out of the dark. “ - Nan Turner

  • “A truly moving piece. It was raw and real and hilarious and heartbreaking.” - Meghann Deveroux

  • “...funny, touching, enraging, and magnificent to watch.” - Tina Anderman Morrison

PUPPETS TAKE THE STAGE (AND SCREEN) AT CSZ PHILADELPHIA
Puppets Here & There uses improv, puppets and video for a one-of-a-kind comedy experience

Philadelphia PA -- CSz Philadelphia, the Home of ComedySportz, is proud to present PUPPETS HERE & THERE, a sophisticated, multi-media, improvised comedy show with puppets. PUPPETS HERE & THERE runs Friday, May 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 8PM. Tickets are $15.

Seven improvisers play dozens of characters using  an eclectic collection of puppets. “It’s actually two shows in one,” says creator and director Joe Sabatino. “First, there is the live version with the performers running around the stage, grabbing puppets and creating really fun improv comedy. Second, we have a video camera that captures the action and projects the puppets-only version onto a screen. The audience chooses which show they want to watch: they can watch the puppets here on stage or there on the screen.”

“It’s like being at a live taping of The Muppet Show,” says CSz Philadelphia Executive Director Don Montrey. “But Kermit and Fozzie use curse words.”

In addition to creating the show, all of the puppets were built by Joe Sabatino. “I was terrified of puppets when I was a kid. I actually had to go to therapy for it. Over time, I learned to use them as a creative outlet. It’s actually therapeutic for me to build and perform with them.”

As a puppeteer, Joe has worked for PBS Kids, The Walt Disney Company and The Jim Henson Company.  As an improviser, he has worked in theaters all around town including Act II, Philly Improv Theater, and has been a member of ComedySportz for 8 years.

Tickets for PUPPETS HERE & THERE are $15 and can be purchased online at csztix.com or by calling 484-450-8089.  The show is designed for audiences ages 18 and up.
