In 2 Square, John Lutz and Peter Grosz take a single suggestion and spin it into an improv comedy extravaganza. Every show features a kaleidoscope of scenes, characters, and callbacks that amazingly come together in a satisfying conclusion. It’s not to be missed!

Our Theater

Our 100-seat theater is comedy-intimate and ADA accessible. You get great sight-lines, comfy seats, private bathrooms, and a concessions stand with moderately-priced snacks and drinks. Everything you need is conveniently located in our space.

We don’t serve alcohol.

But we are BYOB, that means no markup on liquor.

JOHN LUTZ has been acting, improvising and writing for over 30 years. You may know him best as Lutz from 30 Rock. Other screen appearances include: Loot, Chicago Med, The Good Wife, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He wrote for Saturday Night Live from 2004-2010 and is currently in his 10th year writing for Late Night with Seth Meyers. For 3 years, he toured the world from Bangkok to Rockford, IL with The Second City National Touring Company. He created, co-wrote and produced the series Mapleworth Murders, which is streaming on Roku. He is currently featured in the 3rd season of Girls5Eva on Netflix. PETER GROSZ has been teaching improvisation and writing at various theaters across America for over 20 years. In Chicago he wrote and performed in four Second City resident company reviews and was a founding member of the experimental improv groups JTS Brown, 4 Square and 2 Square. He has written for The Colbert Report, Late Night With Seth Meyers and At Home With Amy Sedaris and was the Executive Producer/Showrunner for The President Show. On screens you’ve seen him in The Menu, Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and more. On stage he was in the play Goodnight, Oscar starring Sean Hayes on Broadway. You can hear him on Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me on NPR and he was in a few commercials for Sonic drive-in, but only for 18 years so you might have missed them.

Peter Grosz and John Lutz have a combined 50 years of experience in performing and writing for television, movies and theater. Come ask questions and hear their advice on what they’ve learned over the course of their careers: helpful tips on the art of improv, pitching ideas, using the techniques of improv in your writing, working for late night television and more. They may even tell a story or two about famous people cause they've been right next to LOTS of them.

From Improv to the Writer’s Room

We all struggle with the blank canvas of walking out on stage with one other performer and not knowing what world we're in, how we relate to each other or where we even are. The infinite possibilities can be intimidating and too often we panic and go into invention mode, desperately throwing out random details until something sticks.

In this workshop Peter will get you to slow down and look at what is already present at the top of the scene without you even realizing it’s there. You'll learn to play moment by moment, line by line and get the confidence to build a scene slowly. We'll discuss the difference between “invention” and “discovery” and give you the confidence to embrace the unknown.Unconditional Support
